Felipe Nasr says it is his plan to race in the GP2 Series this season alongside his new role as test and reserve driver for the Williams F1 team.
The Brazilian made his test debut in the FW36 in Bahrain last week after being confirmed alongside race drivers Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas, as well as development driver Susie Wolff.
Though the role will take in selected free practice outings on race weekends, Nasr says it remains his plan to secure a race seat in the GP2 Series in an effort to push for the title and improve his chances of securing an F1 race seat for 2015.
As it stands, Nasr is yet to firm a seat for 2014, with his remaining options limited to drives at Carlin – with whom he finished fifth overall last season -, Racing Engineering, MP Motorsport, Trident and Venezuela GP Lazarus.
“I am looking at doing GP2 again,” he said. “There are not many [seats] left, but it is the plan.”
Yet to win a race in GP2, despite scoring ten podiums in two seasons, Nasr has praised the decision to change the tyre regulations in 2014 in an effort to bring the series into line with F1.
“The last three years you can see the series has been quite messy. It was a good thing they changed the regulations for this year because now you must use the two compounds in race one, which makes a lot more sense.
“Sometimes in GP2 I was leading a race and then suddenly someone came with prime tyres, which don't degrade as much, so the guy can do a later pit-stop. But if I'm playing for the championship I have to be on the conservative side to make sure I scored in race one and two. I think they [organisers] have realised that though, so it should be a good change.”
