Since 1982 the NASCAR Nationwide Series has been racing at the historic 2.5-mile tri-oval at Daytona International Speedway. Over the past 37 races, Chevrolet has absolutely dominated the competition with 28 race victories which includes 17 of the past 22 contests.
With Chevy power under the hood, Dale Earnhardt Jr. found victory lane five times through the 2000’s, and he added another triumph in 2010. Today, he'll start 16th.
Although Earnhardt Jr. and Busch are huge names in NASCAR racing, is it possible that a bigger name is rising to the top... former IndyCar driver Danica Patrick.
After grabbing the Pole for the Daytona 500 in 2013, there has been a lot of attention regarding Danica. But can she win today from third ?
We doubt it. Because to do so she'll have to unseat 3-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart from his throne. Did you know Tony Stewart has won seven of the last nine January NASCAR Nationwide races at Daytona ?
That should have made our pick easy.... Tony Stewart except, Tony won't be racing today.
So check out Dale Earnhardt Jr. for the victory, or Kyle Busch if Earnhardt can't get it done. Busch won the Truck race last night.
As always, Daytona is always a wild race to begin the season with extremely close, side-by-side pack racing and finishes that are too close to call.
Expect much of the same today.
So enjoy the NASCAR Nationwide season opener.
