After an extremely eventful Formula 1 Grand Prix in Melbourne there has been even more news.

Following a second stewards’ investigation this morning (Thursday 2 April), both Lewis Hamilton and McLaren have been accused of giving ‘misleading’ evidence during the hearing held after the race. This has resulted in Hamilton being disqualified and Jarno Trulli being reinstated in the final race standings.

Last weekend Hamilton was handed third place after Trulli was demoted by 25 seconds to 12th position. According to the official Formula 1 website: “Trulli ran off road near the end of the race, thus losing a place to McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, but then repassed the world champion once he had rejoined the circuit.”

However, the story of the weekend was the new Brawn-Mercedes team taking the first two positions in a stunning opening race. Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello, who a few weeks ago weren’t even sure of starting the season, were overjoyed with the team’s performance. They clearly had the fastest cars over the whole weekend and expressed their gratitude towards their team and Ross Brawn over the radio system for all to hear. Button specifically thanked the team for giving him the chance to race this year.

“It’s not just for me but for the whole team,” he said, “a fairy-tale ending really to the first race of our career together and I hope we can continue this way. We are going to fight every way we can to keep this car competitive and at the front. This has got to continue and this is where we want to be. Bring on Malaysia!”

Before the race Rubens Barrichello was asked about the car and how he felt about the race ahead he said: “I am very motivated. I am over the moon with the performance of the car. I am ready for it – it turned out to be the car that I’ve been dreaming of over the winter. I knew that it could be competitive from what people were saying, so I have to say it turned out exactly that way. The car has the potential to do very, very well. But what is very well? Is it winning or finishing on the podium, or is it finishing high in the points? I don’t know. But that is what we are going to discover.”
