F1 set to race in Azerbaijan – Bernie Ecclestone

Bernie Ecclestone says Azerbaijan is set to host a grand prix, joining the calendar in either 2015 or 2016.

According to a report in the Daily Mail any deal for a race in Azerbaijan has been facilitated by former Renault team principal Flavio Briatore, and that the grand prix will take place around the streets of the capital, Baku.

Ecclestone has said that there will be a grand prix in Azerbaijan in the near future but that which year it will make its debut on the calendar has still yet to be decided.

“We're going to Azerbaijan,” Ecclestone said. “The people out there (in Azerbaijan) are talking about holding a race in 2015. That may be a bit soon — unless it's at the end of the season, that's a possibility. But 2016 is more likely.”

With the Austrian Grand Prix returning and a race in Russia having joined the calendar this year, if Azerbaijan were to be included next year it would be one of three potential additions to the current 19 races. The Grand Prix of America in New Jersey has once again been delayed until 2015 at least, while the Indian Grand Prix is meant to rejoin the calendar in an early-season slot.

Azerbaijan hosted its first international motorsport event in 2013 with the concluding round of the 2013 FIA GT Series around the streets of Baku and, aided by its richness in oil and gas, has displayed significant growth in economy and tourism in recent years.
