The go-fast gurus at Ferrari are working on a successor to the jaw-dropping Enzo that could be the lightest, quickest two-seater ever to roll out of Maranello.
We told you months ago the Scuderia’s next supercar would be based on the Millechili concept that embraces the "less is more" ethos. Ferrari sees lighter cars as the best way to reach its goal of increasing fuel economy 40 percent and reducing emissions 25 percent without compromising its reputation for performance. The Millechili is a guidepost to that greener future.
The future arrives in two years in a 600-horsepower car that weighs 2,200 pounds.
According to Car and Driver, Ferrari will introduce the as-yet-unnamed supercar in 2010. C&D says it won’t be called the Millechili — but it will look a lot like the styling concept (pictured) Ferrari showed off last year.
The car will have an aluminum space frame similar to the F430 Scuderia but stretched to a wheelbase of 104.3 inches and fitted with a V10 engine. That’s a break from Ferrari’s tradition of putting V8s or V12s in its road cars, but Ferrari won five consecutive Formula 1 championships with its V10s, so the engine undoubtedly will be a corker.
The only thing sweeter than the car’s engine is its weight. Millechili is Italian for 1,000 kilos, and that’s just what the car will weigh. Not only is that 660 pounds lighter than the Enzo, it’s 200 pounds lighter than a Mazda MX-5 Miata and only 216 pounds heavier than the Lotus Elise. The Enzo accelerated from 0 to 62 mph (100 kph) in 3.65 seconds and had a claimed top speed of 225 mph, so it’s safe to say the Millechili will be very quick. It’ll certainly have one of the best power-to-weight ratios of any car on the road, coming in behind the Caparo T1 and SSC Ultimate Aero but ahead of the Saleen S7 and Bugatti Veyron. Active suspension will adjust the ride height for maximum aerodynamic efficiency and handling.
That kind of performance doesn’t come cheap. If you want one of the 300 or so cars Maranello plans to build, be ready to lay out half a million dollarsFerrari sees China to be top 3 market
Shanghai, November 4 (Gasgoo.com) Italian carmaker Fiat said Tuesday that China is to be one of the top three markets of its luxury cars in 5 years, Reuters reported.
Ferrari aimed to sell about 600 units per year in China over the same time frame, Marco Mattiacci, the company's Asia-Pacific chief executive, told Reuters in an interview.
Since Ferrari rolled to the Chinese market in 2004, the total sales has recorded 650 vehicles, boosting China into the top 10 of global Ferrai lineup, Mattiacci told Reuters at a company event to unveil the 599 GTB Fiorano model.
Porsche, Ferrari’s German rival, has already showed its awareness of the China market potential by releasing its much-awaited Panamera grand tourer on the eve of the Shanghai Auto Show in April this year.
"Today, China is the No.1 car market in the world, but great improvement is needed in terms of quality, design and customer service. We have the best of them." Mattiacci said.
The demand brings the top brands into China, where the chemistry between China’s buyers and the top brands is booming.
Ferrari F40
Enzo Ferrari was 90 years old when he decided to produce the F40. Ferrari was losing its edge on the sports car industry (mainly to Porsche) at the time, so the man decided to create a new project to show the world what they were capable of doing. The rest, as you know, is history.
Design: The F40 was built to perform, so its design is rustic. It had panels made of kevlar, carbon fiber and aluminum for strength and low weight. Its accented lines and the legendary rear spoiler immortalized the car.
Performance: Despite being produced in the early 1990s, the F40 is still one of the fastest street legal cars in the world. It goes from 0-60 mph (0-100 km/h) in 3.2 seconds, and has a top speed of 201 mph (324 km/h).
Chick Factor: Huge. It’s a Ferrari, needless to add anything else
Ferrari Concept 2008 inspired by the F430
Ferrari appears to be a source of inspiration for a number of up-and-coming young designers with the likes of Idries Omar, Emre Husmen and now Luca Serafini all using the Italian exotics as inspiration for some of their best works. The latest design, dubbed the Ferrari Concept 2008, is based on the F430 supercar and shows a possible design direction for the next-gen model. Drawing on inspiration from both past and present Ferrari models, Serafini wanted something that could stand on its own but would always be recognized as a Ferrari. Serafini next plan is to create a one-quarter scale model of the car and hopefully present it at design competitions in Italy’s automotive design hub, Turin. One of Serafini’s most popular previous works includes the Lamborghini Embolado concept, a compact supercar loosely based on the Gallardo with a unique cab forward design and plenty of aggression.
